VRF capacity calculator

Enter basic building and climate data to see a preliminary cooling-capacity range. The result supports early planning; it is not a final heat-load calculation or equipment selection.

Detailed pre-assessment

How the estimate works

The tool adjusts an approximate W/m² starting value for the selected use with climate, ceiling height, insulation, solar gain, floor/exposure, internal-load and approximate outdoor-air factors. It reports a ±15% range instead of false precision.

  • Useful for early comparison and an initial project discussion.
  • Does not replace room-by-room heat-gain calculations or manufacturer selection software.
  • For extreme climates, actual model capacity at design outdoor temperature must be verified.

Why savings cannot be calculated from floor area alone

A savings estimate needs baseline consumption, operating hours, part-load profile, tariffs and seasonal performance. The tool therefore does not invent a savings percentage; a project comparison can be prepared from verified data.

Installation, testing and commissioning

01

What data is needed for a final heat-load calculation?

Final equipment selection is based on room-level project data, not total floor area alone.

01

Architecture and zones

Plans, net areas, ceiling heights, uses and operating schedules.

02

Building envelope

Wall, roof, floor and glazing U-values; orientation, shading and leakage.

03

Internal gains

People, lighting, IT, kitchen or process equipment and schedules.

04

Outdoor air and humidity

Airflow, door traffic, exhaust, heat recovery and sensible/latent split.

05

Climate design data

Summer/winter design temperature, humidity and altitude for the city.

06

VRF system limits

Pipe length, height difference, connection ratio, diversity and ambient correction.

02

Starting values used by the tool

These W/m² values are only starting coefficients for the selected use. They are not a standard, code value or final design criterion.

From pre-assessment to final selection

01

Collect data

Prepare plans, uses, glazing, people, equipment and outdoor-air data.

02

Calculate each room

Determine the peak hour and sensible/latent load for every zone.

03

Select in manufacturer software

Verify combinations, piping limits and capacity corrections.

04

Build a complete quotation

Define equipment, materials, controls, logistics, installation and commissioning.

05

When should this tool be used?

Appropriate uses

  • Early feasibility and capacity scale
  • Comparing building scenarios under the same assumptions
  • Identifying missing project inputs before quotation

Do not use it alone for

  • Final equipment/model selection
  • Hospitals, laboratories or process cooling
  • Electrical demand or energy consumption
  • Guaranteed budget or savings percentage

Technical scope and sources

ASHRAE requires envelope, internal gains, infiltration, outdoor air, moisture and hourly diversity to be assessed together. AHRI 1230 defines VRF performance ratings. This free tool does not replace those professional procedures.

Frequently asked questions

Can VRF capacity be selected from floor area alone?

No. This tool only gives a starting range. Final selection requires room-by-room assessment of façades, glazing, people, equipment, lighting, ventilation, humidity, schedules and outdoor design conditions.

Is the VRF HP result an equipment selection?

No. HP is only an approximate nominal-capacity equivalent. Outdoor-unit modules, connection ratio, piping and climate corrections must be checked in manufacturer software.

Why does the tool not show a currency price?

VRF project cost depends on equipment combinations, piping, controls, installation, logistics and site conditions. Project documents must be reviewed for a defensible budget.

Does the outdoor-air option mean a VRF unit supplies fresh air?

No. It only represents an approximate additional cooling effect. The outdoor-air unit, airflow, filtration and humidity control require separate design.

Can heating capacity be selected from this result?

No. This is a cooling pre-assessment. Heating needs winter design temperature, defrost behaviour and low-ambient capacity tables.

Can I use the result directly as outdoor-unit capacity?

No. Zone peaks may not coincide; diversity, connection ratio, piping and manufacturer limits change the final selection.
